At all the Golden Globe awards ceremonies, celebrities look forward to hitting the red carpet in designer- wear, but there is also the perk of the celebrity swag bag. Each year, they select a myriad of A-List products and fill featured bags for the female and male attendees to take home, whether they have been only nominated or walked away with the Golden Globe.
This year, for the guys, it was the Lug Shuttlebus Weekender Wheelie Bag. Lug is a brand that was developed by a husband and wife team to bring organization to the family “on the go”. It is also a brand that has had a great amount of celebrity endorsement, prior to being selected for the men’s swag bag of 2016.
The Lug Shuttle Bus Weekender Bag is constructed of a hardy polyester fabric and has a multitude of compartments for organization, including a ventilated zip compartment on the back and a soft-lined interior accessory compartment for more fragile items. It also has double handles, a padded shoulder strap, or a retractable handle and wheels to get you where you need to go.
At The Golden Globes this year, they used every organizational pocket to hold some of the most popular grooming and accessory products for men. The products included: Caolin Hot and Cool Pore Cleaner Duo; L’Oreal Men’s Expert Moisturizer; Lug Bento 3-Piece Toiletry Set; Rituals Skincare Samurai Magic Shave and Fig Fragrance Sticks; Rusk Hair Products; a Corkcicle Brushed Copper Tumbler; a Dunheger Travel Scale; Incipio F80 Earbuds; a Misfit Wearable Flash Link; and a Wolf Manufacturing Travel Neck Pillow, among others. The celebrity men not only get to try some of the hottest products out there, but also end up with one of the most sought-after, every day luggage pieces.
For January, there has been a lot of buzz for the new movies of the season. Two of those films have been in the action/adventure category and both have been inspired by true stories. First is “The Revenant”, which is a story that was adapted from a fur trapper named Hugh Glass’, who endured harsh conditions and events in the wilderness of Montana and South Dakota in 1823.
Since its initial release on December 25th 2015, the film and its actors have been collecting all kinds of awards and is one of the favorites, as we approach The Oscars. “The Revenant” leading men, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, have been seen at many red carpet events and are looking very GQ-esque while hanging out together in LA. Leonardo is dressed in a more traditional style with his deep navy two-button suit jacket, but spices it up with accents of a textured grey tie and a crisp white button-down. Tom Hardy chose to be a little more flashy and less conventional in his three-piece navy suit with a modern sheen, two-tone skinny tie that was complete with a chain link tie tack, and a lapel pin. Some three-piece suits look too prom-like, but Tom does it right with this one.
The other film that is soon to be released and also stems from true events is “The Finest Hours”. A daring officer in the Chatham Massachusetts Coast Guard, Daniel Cluff, and his crew set out to rescue thirty sailors who are trapped inside the SS Pendleton, which was split in two by a huge storm in February 1952. Chris Pine is one of the lead characters and is shown here with mixed sartorial results on the red carpet at the world premier. He is dressed in a great taupe-grey colored suit, but there is just something wrong about the button placement in the jacket. They are set two high, making the lapels look short, which also makes his torso appear not long and lean. Chris leaves his look a little more on the casual side with his open collar, but it would have looked a little more put together with a tie that had some purple to coordinate with his pocket square.
In contrast, his female co-star Holliday Grianger is an absolute stunner in her exquisite black Elie Saab gown that had an equally plunging neckline, as compared to the deep slit in the front. Holliday accessorized with a chic belt, platform sandals, ruby red lips, and I imagine lots of Hollywood Tape to keep things together!
As the awards season comes into full swing, celebrities are busy running from one red carpet to the next. This week, it was to the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, CA for the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which honored the finest in cinematic achievement. Some of the winners this year were: “The Big Short” for Best Comedy; “Mr. Robot” for Best Drama Series; and “Mad Max: Fury Road” for Best Visual Effects.
The red carpet at the Critics’ Choice Awards had some new faces and some very familiar ones. One couple that has been keeping a low profile since their surprise birthday party/wedding on August 5th of this year is Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux. Jennifer is there to support Justin, who was nominated for “Best Actor in a Drama Series” in The Leftovers. She has on a sea glass colored, spaghetti-strap gown by Saint Laurent by Heidi Slimane that has a daringly deep frontal slit to make up for the straps of fabric sewn on the bustline and droopy bodice. The color of Jen’s dress is fantastic on her and her thin-strapped metallic Jimmy Choo sandals really show off her long lean legs, but the design is not so thrilling. Justin is bringing back the skinny tie, thin lapels, and pairing it with leaner leg trousers in his Givenchy black suit, which is a modern style that fits him well.
Another couple who gleamed on the red carpet at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Santa Monica was newly engaged Jason Stratham and former Victoria Secret Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Jason and Rosie also jumped onto the Saint Laurent band wagon for this red carpet. Rosie was as dazzling as her smile with her asymmetrical neckline black gown that also had killer front slit. She accessorized with a great textured black clutch, linear diamond earrings, and silver strappy sandals. Although, I bet that her new engagement ring was her favorite accessory. Jason looks very happy and debonair in his Saint Laurent tux that also had similar skinny details as Justin Theroux.
Also, following in the trend of daringly deep dress slits was mom-to-be Liv Tyler. Liv is glowing as she shows off her “baby bump” in a Cushnie Et Ochs creation. I’m not a huge fan of the Dolman sleeve, cape-like top, but Liv pulls it all off flawlessly.
On January 10th, the 73rd Annual Golden Globes was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. The event is considered the kick-off to the awards season and the winners have been used in the past to gauge who will be the front-runners for the Oscars. The Golden Globes, which are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to honor excellence in TV and Film, as opposed to some of the other award ceremonies, has a little bit more of a party atmosphere with the celebrities sitting at dining tables and free to mingle during the event. There is also more of a playful fashion license when it comes to the red carpet.
For the ladies, Irish actress and model Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser in series “Outlander” is a head-turner in this sexy creation by Alexander McQueen. The black negligee-style gown is overlaid with a sheer skirt with frilly bottom and matching cap sleeves that trim the lace top. With the trend for revealing as much body parts as possible, it is refreshing to see how sexy one can look without having everything exposed. Caitriona’s pulled back hair, sparkly dangle earrings, and red lips are the perfect accompaniment.
Another unique gown was worn by Jane Fonda. She arrived to the red carpet at The Golden Globes in a couture creation by Yves Saint Laurent. Jane’s shapely figure is still evident with the dress’s full length pencil skirt, but gets lost in the textured, ruffled caplet. There is just too much going on from her chin to her waist and all I can think of is a clam shell, when looking at her.
The guys also had their fair share of poetic license when it came to fashion. American Horror Story actor Denis O’Hare made a very unusual choice in footwear to accompany his black and white check sports coat. Denis walked a little taller in these glorious platform strap sandals by Christian Louboutin, which definitely added some spice to the night.
The Rock and actor Jason Statham pulled the velvet card when choosing their tuxes for the Golden Globes. The wine color that Dwayne Johnson chose is right on trend, but it is a whole lot of velvet for a guys his size. Jason’s deep chocolate brown jacket is a nice rich tone, but I am not a fan of the shawl-collar style lapels. It just reminds me of the old “smoking jackets”
On Wednesday, January 6th, the Staples Center in Los Angeles hosted the People’s Choice Awards 2016. The event has been held annually since 1975 and recognizes actors and their work through votes from the general public. The People’s Choice honors categories like “Favorite Action Movie”, “Favorite TV Show”, and “Favorite Pop Artist”. The red carpet was teaming with celebrity nominees and their supporters, who arrived in grand style.
One of the most elegant and simplistic outfits was worn by actress Kate Hudson. The jump suit has been a huge trend and her pure white, strapless one with the wide pant legs made her look like a goddess. The waist and leg seaming gave the pantsuit just the right shape without having to be to curve hugging. Having her pant legs long enough to cover her pumps makes Kate look much taller than 5’6” and keeping her accessories simple with dangle earrings and a white barrel clutch just adds to her elegant look.
Another classic look was Chris Hemsworth, who was awarded “Favorite Action Movie Actor”. He showed that you can wow the crowd with a look that is simple. Chris had on a classic black button-down that was nicely tailored, but not too tight. He kept the “column dressing” going with his fitted black trousers and black belt. Chris did, however, throw a little trend in footwear our way with his dark brown leather shoes. I have seen footwear choices for men that are not “matchy-matchy” with the color of their outfits lately, even when it comes to suits.
One suit that was definitely “out of the box” was worn by dancer Frankie Grande. His iridescent turquoise suit had a tunic-length jacket and slim leg trousers that were certainly made of flexible fabric, in order to bust those moves. Frankie’s choice of a crisp white shirt and funkie black and turquoise shoes were definitely accessories that made his outfit pop.
Some of the gowns that graced the People’s Choice Awards were gorgeous, but the one worn by Amber Valletta of the new show “Blood and Oil”, was not one of them. Amber is a pretty woman, but even though her gown followed the popular “cut-out” trend, the color and style reminded me of an ace bandage wrapped around her. However, the Amber’s choice of the tan, gladiator wedges were cool.
