When it comes to the award ceremonies each year, the red carpet is where you will see what is trending in both fashion and jewelry. At this year’s 67th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on September 20th, it was definitely the “statement earring” that ruled the red carpet. There was so much emphasis placed on the earring that a lot of celebrity necklines remained bare, in order to let the earrings steal the show.
One example is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was stunning in a one-shoulder black gown. Not only was Julia a winner in the category of “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series”, but she also brought on the sparkle with her 28.78 carat white and colored diamond earrings by Chopard. They were like wearing an entire solar system of shining stars on your ears.
A similarly stunning look was worn by Sophia Vegara from Modern Family. To accessorize her curve loving, strapless metallic dress, she chose a large spiral pair of champagne diamond earrings, set in platinum, by a popular celebrity jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. The spiral shape brought much interest up to her jaw-line and golden color of the diamonds was the perfect accompaniment to her shimmering golden gown.
Aside from the splash of all diamonds, there were also some great gemstone and vintage looking earrings on this year’s Emmy Awards red carpet. Julie Bowen, also a starring actress from the hit comedy show Modern family, had a pair of deep green, organically shaped drop earrings that dangled from a sparkly diamond hoop. These and Julie’s matching ring really infused some color to her fantastic mermaid style gown.
There were also several vintage- looking statement earrings that were worn at the 2015 Emmy red carpet. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal had on this gorgeous pair of diamond and gold lacy medallion drop earrings that were not overpowering, but still made a statement.
When it comes to what is trending in the hairstyle category, you can always be assured that if you look to celebrities you will find what is current with color and cut. Sometimes, actors do have to adapt their look to whatever role that they may be playing at the time, but you will definitely see their individual style shine through.
For men this year, you will be seeing more of the “swept back” look like you see with this photo of actor Colin Farrell. It is a very neat, almost vintage look, but still allows for a little piecey layering of the hair, so that you don’t end up looking like you are wearing a helmet. Colin’s facial hair is also closely trimmed, in a movement away from the bushy bearded look.
Also, you will see more men this year with a pompadour style haircut that very hot in the fashion world. This particular hairstyle dates back to the 1700’s and was also popular with singers like Elvis. It is characterized by an upsweep of the hair off the forehead in a rolling fashion that keeps the bulk of the hair on top of your head. In this photo of fashion icon and soccer star David Beckham, the sides and back of his hair are shaved more closely to pair with his facial hair, giving it an almost a congruent look. For either one of these styles, styling products and a blow dryer with round brush will be a must.
As far as female hairstyles are concerned, the “curly girl” is back, so if you are lucky enough to not have to perm, roll, or wave your hair, then enjoy the fact that you are “in” this season. You will be seeing a lot of the lose “beach wave” tresses in women with longer hair like in this photo of actress Olivia Wilde with her flowing long hair that is colored in a very trendy ombre style where the darker on top fades into the lighter on the bottom.
For the short hair category, actress Jennifer Lawrence is the perfect example of a short wispy hairstyle that is still feminine looking to highlight her beautiful facial features, but still with not too much styling to deal with when it comes to getting ready in the am.
On July 15, 2015, the annual ESPY Awards was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It was a ground-breaking ceremony with Caitlyn Jenner being one of the big recipients of the evening. On the red carpet, there were sports stars from all the different realms of the sporting world, as well as the family and friends who came to celebrate their excellence. There were some outfits that definitely stood out among the crowd.
In the “flashy” category is NFL player Ricardo Lockette who arrived on the red carpet is this very trendy black and white polka dot sports coat with solid black lapels, black button-down shirt and matching bow tie. The size of the dots makes it a bold fashion statement and the contrasting orange/red pocket square and watch face definitely adds a colorful interest and breaks up the repetitive color and pattern of the polka dots. It is a great way to stand out in a crowd.
Another NFL player who was in touch with his “preppy” self at the 23rd annual ESPY Awards was J. J. Watt. He looks summery in his white trousers and white dress shirt and he adds some nice color with his light navy, two-button sports jacket and pink tie with pocket square. The only part of J. J.’s outfit that I am not too fond of is his brown leather oxfords. I think I would have liked to have seen the navy color repeated in his shoes too, in order to tie his look all together.
One of two ladies who made quite the “flashy” entrances was mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey, who showed off her athletic stature in this sheer-panel, cut-out dress in color-blocked black and white. Ronda’s choice of t-strap sandals with the spiky heel and ankle strap in a matching black and white pattern is a great accompaniment to her dress.
The other woman who definitely turned heads at the ESPY Awards was former “Spice Girl” Melanie Brown, who arrived on the red carpet in this fantastically-fitting red dress with a cross-over bodice, simple lines down to a hemline below the knees, and a sexy side slit. Mel B’s color coordinated pointy-toed pumps are the right choice to pull her look all together, as well as her matching dangle earrings.
As soon as the Summer comes, the movie industry starts releasing their blockbuster line-ups to the public for the season’s entertainment. Along with the movie premieres, come the stars of the films and their celebrity friends who make their way across the red carpet. For example, for the Terminator Genisys movie premiere in Los Angeles this month, two old pals who still enjoy the spotlight gathered to celebrate the opening.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone posed together on the red carpet. Arnold looks official in his stylish navy suit that is built to accommodate his expansive chest, while Sly is a little less formal in his blue and black micro-check blazer that is paired with a pair of indigo blue jeans. They both know their men’s accessories pretty well: Arnold has the cool skull ring, while Sylvester rocks his outfit with a “boss” pair of shades.
Next, we have Emelia Clarke at the movie premiere of Terminator Genisys also, who is making me dizzy in this optical illusion halter gown. I understand the concept and it is quite an interesting style, but it really makes you feel like you are looking into the “Twilight Zone”.
Sandra Bullock is having a little fun on the red carpet with her new “Minion” movie. She showed up in this fitted black dress with a yellow stripe on the shoulder, as well as bright yellow Minion pumps to promote the flick.
Last, but not least, is Channing Tatum. He stopped to pose on the red carpet in this fantastic slate blue suit with a crisp white shirt and a patterned blue tie. He is definitely dressed conservatively, as compared to his wild and crazy character of Magic Mike, but he does look just as good fully dressed in his suit as he does as a dancer.
This year the BET Awards, which is an awards ceremony established by the Black Entertainment Network to celebrate African American entertainers in the fields of music, acting, and sports, was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 28th. The red carpet was sizzling hot with male and female celebrity fashion. Some looks were traditional with tuxedos and gowns, while other looks were a little, how you say, manufactured.
One example of a manufactured or out-of-the-box look is singer Chris Brown who arrived on the red carpet in this baseball – style jacket with the black fabric body and a bright pop of color in the black leather sleeves that have the painted roses on them. Chris paired this fabulous jacket with a simple white t-shirt, long black shorts and sneakers for a trendy casual look. He also chose the right accessories with his white Fedora, white bold watch, and the perfect shades.
The other out-of-the-box fashion look for the females on the red carpet at The BET Awards was singer/dancer/actress Zendaya in this sexy, silver sequined menswear-inspired dress. The pointed collar, cuff sleeves, and front button placket was a menswear type of look, but in no way masculine when it was blended with the sheer bodice, cut-out chest pockets, high hemline, and super-stiletto sandals. Zendaya’s cute pixie haircut was the perfect complement to her over-all look.
Some more traditional looks for the red carpet at the BET Awards is “Murder in the First” TV actress Nicole Parker and actor Boris Codjo who are dressed to the hilt in her white fitted gown with white lace cut-outs, that hug her perfectly proportioned curves and his grey tuxedo with black lapels and pockets. I like the all white dress shirt and trousers that create a column type of effect under the jacket and let it be the main attraction of Boris’ look.
Just this past Sunday was the 69th Annual Tony Awards that was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. It was a celebration of the Broadway production achievements for the past season. The award show itself is a musical extravaganza that is loaded with celebrities, as well as talent. Prior to the show, there is a parade of fashion across the red carpet of celebrities. Some of the fashion is fabulous and some, not so much.
Starting off with one of the best dressed women at the Tony Awards is Vanessa Hudgens. The former child actress and singer is certainly all grown up looking in her Naeem Khan abstract floral halter gown. The coral flowers with pops of yellow, on a cream colored background was a great color for Vanessa and the plunging halter top with cumber bun-style waist, along with the full pleated bottom made her look like the Queen of Spring.
On the best dressed men’s list for the 69th Annual Tony Awards was boy band singer and actor Nick Jonas. He looked simply dashing in his Louis Vuitton solid black tuxedo with traditional satin lapels, trousers with side striping, and a crisp white dress shirt. This particular suit hugged Nick’s shoulders and gave him a waist-shape that was very flattering. Sometimes, a classic choice is the best.
During the presentations, there was a “double take” with actresses Anna Chlumsky and Debra Messing, as they arrived to the stage in very similar gowns. I have to say that I really didn’t like either of them. Anna’s gown was a little more shapely in the placement of the straps, but the overall look with combination of black, eggplant, and a maroon stripe at the bottom just left me feeling confused. Debra had a more tonal look, but the fit was terrible and not very flattering.
At the top of the guy’s worst dressed list was actor Alan Cumming. He is always striving for a unique look, but this one is just bizarre with the Bermuda style shorts, black high-top shoes that are paired with a patterned blue and white jacket. I guess he was probably one of the coolest in temperature at the awards show.
