At the beginning of January this year, was the People’s Choice Awards that was held in the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, where the best was chosen for categories in movies, television, and music. Just like the title suggests, the people were actually the ones to vote. Celebrities took to the red carpet, some in award-winning fashion, and some not even nominated for that category.
First up is Shemar Moore. He is one of the lead actors in the drama series “Criminal Minds”. The suit that he selected to wear had to be one of the worst outfits that I have ever seen him in. Shemar is a muscular guy and this baggy, grey suit does nothing for him at all. It hangs weirdly on him, making his shoulders look slouchy and the trousers look high waisted. I am all for the color grey, but Shemar needed to have the jacket taken in around the waist and arms to give his body a little definition and maybe a little brighter color or pattern added into the mix.
Next, in the fashion fail category is Kaley Cuoco Sweeting. She plays Penny in the hit comedy series “Big Bang Theory”. She has a very fit shape, with broad shoulders, defined arm muscles, and a slim waist, but her gown choice is questionable. The white top of the gown kind of resembles a bathing suit top with the spaghetti straps and the side cut outs that got sewn on to a plain black skirt. Being a young, good-looking woman, I think she could have made a more chic choice.
In the fashion winner category for the women was Monica Potter, who is one of the actresses in the T.V. drama “Parenthood”. She is wearing one of this year’s hottest retro items: The jumpsuit. It was popular in the 70’s and 80’s, but has recently made a resurgence in women’s fashion. I like the simplicity of the all black fabric, the bloussant waist, and wider leg. The halter top styling is also a great look, however I think that Monica could have used a little bling with some sparkly earrings and a bracelet.
Also, in the fashion winner category is Ben Affleck. As he collected his People’s Choice Award on stage, he looked quite handsome in his nicely tailored, charcoal grey suit, crisp white shirt, and bright navy tie.
As we are ending all that was 2014 and looking forward to 2015, we will remember both the good and the bad. When we look back at celebrity fashion throughout a year filled with red carpets, movie premiers, or just a glimpse of their street style, a few stand out in our minds for their fantastic fashion sense, but more are remembered for their fashion no-no’s.
To start off that list is actress/author Evangeline Lilly, who has starred in recent films like the last two Hobbit series and also just recently has been promoting her new children’s book, “The Squickerwonkers”. She showed up a book signing at Barnes and Noble in what looks like a table cloth from some Italian Restaurant that is tied in odd places to expose a little leg, also with a soft-sided grey suit jacket. Unusual for sure, but, I do like Evangeline’s bi-colored leather boots and tri-colored bucket hat.
Next, is a photo of Jack Black and I hope he is coming from the gym. With his black and red basketball shorts, white ankle socks, and brown sneakers better built for hiking, he will definitely not make the pages of GQ. Even Jack’s black puffer jacket, that is trending high this year, is off the mark because it has such a long body that it makes him look unproportionally short. However, I do give him an “A” for his enthusiasm.
Taking a look at the red carpet arrivals for 2014, it was definitely true that skin was In. There were lacey gowns, strapless dresses, and short skirts galore, but some of the mesh ones went a little overboard. The first one is actress Jaime Alexander, who arrived on the red carpet of the movie premier “Thor: The Dark World” in this sleek black dress with a strategically-carved mesh area from neckline to hemline. She has a fantastic shape, but I think that being able to see Jaime’s tan lines took away from the elegant look. It also must have taken yards of “Hollywood Tape” to secure that mesh area, in order to avoid a wardrobe malfunction. In the opposite photo, Gwyneth Paltro is also strolling the red carpet of “Iron Man 3” also in a sheer nightmare, however, this one is even made more confusing with the multiple colors, sheer side panels, and mesh sleeves. These are two examples of “less is not more”.
To end the look back upon fashion “no-no’s” is none other than Dennis Rodman, who is always known for his unusual style, but this outfit from last year takes the cake with his black halter top, white lace vest, and patchwork jeans. Of course, what would the look be without the chain belly-belt, dark sunglasses and a questionable men’s hat?…
On November 23, 2104 the annual celebration of the latest talents on the music scene today took place. The American Music Awards was held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and those celebrities who shine in the music industry, as well as those who admire them, hit the red carpet for the event.
One woman who not only is a singer, dancer, producer, but also has her own line of fashion is Jennifer Lopez. She and Iggy Azalea brought attention to the “abundant derierres” with their song “Booty” during their AMA performance. JLo’s red carpet look, however, drew attention to her overall figure with this nude colored, strappy wrapped dress that seem to be channeling her inner goddess. Her dress had a great little gather in the front that enhanced the overall look of its “strappy” midsection and bustline. Jennifer shows that a woman in her forty’s can look as hot as any of the younger set. Also, love how she accessorized with a pair of glitter pumps, matching square clutch, and minimal make-up.
Next, is Ansel Elgort, who is a young actor that has starred in recent movies like “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars”. He has become one of the hottest Hollywood men recently, but I have no idea what he was thinking with this outfit for the American Music Awards. My eyes are drawn immediately to his cropped suit jacket that looks like it shrunk at the cleaners with the tight fit, short sleeves, and angular hemline. Then, he amplifies the ugliness factor with a white button-down shirt that has a two-toned stripe down the placket that is tucked into a pair of low-rise leopard, speckled trousers. Unfortunately, the only part of his look that I like is his brown lace-up shoes.
Lastly, is a couple of TV personality hosts form the BET’s Rocsi Diaz and Terrence J. Terrence looks suave in his deep purple colored tuxedo with the grey lapels, charcoal dress shirt, and black trousers. It is a fantastic departure from the regular old black that retains the same class impact. His co-host Rocsi, however, looks like she is wearing an almost athletic top that got sewed onto a loud, geometric skirt. I could have seen the flouncy skirt alone with a solid black top, minus the “peek-a-boo”.
Since the debut of the original Hunger Games in March 2012, fans have been waiting excitedly for the story to continue. This November, the star-studded cast has taken to the red carpet for the latest of the trilogy: Mockingjay Part 1. As previously, the stars of the movie shine at the World Premiere, as well as on the screen.
First, is the leading lady Jennifer Lawrence, who looks absolutely stunning in this white, quilted texture gown that has the on-trend high/low hem and black embroidered roses trickling across the chest of the dress and down her right side. Jennifer’s choice in single strap black sandals coordinate perfectly with the gown, but keep the focus on the gown, where it should be. She also chose a soft colored makeup to blend well with the femininity of the dress.
Next, is Liam Hemsworth, who looks debonair in his black three piece suit that is accented with a crisp white shirt, slim black tie, satin lapels, and black and white polka dot pocket square. Liam doesn’t seem to get as much attention as his older brother Chris, who was just named by People Magazine as “The Sexiest Man Alive”. Makes you wonder if there is any sibling rivelry in the Hemsworth household.
Another cast member of Mockingjay Part 1 to hit the red carpet at the World Premiere was Elizabeth Banks. It is hard to deny her beauty, even in her dramatic red and blue tie-dye like gown with the plunging neckline and cape-like train. The dress fits the character that she portrays in the Hunger Game movie series, which is sort of quirky, with lots of dramatic flair, but I don’t know what made her choose this one.
Lastly, is another male cast member to Mockingjay Part 1, Sam Claflin. For this premiere, he chose the fantastic color combinations of a burgundy, double breasted sports jacket and a pair of shimmering grey trousers. He keeps the focus on the jacket and pants with a white shirt, buttoned to the neck and black leather lace-up shoes.
November 14 was the television premier of the Hollywood Film Awards. In previous years, this particular awards ceremony had never been seen by the general public. It was founded by Carlos de Abreau and Janice Pennington in 1997 to honor excellence in filmmaking, while also being the “kick-off” to the awards season. The Hollywood Film Awards was held this year at Hollywood Palladium and the red carpet was flooded with celebrities in some amazing and unique fashions, donning designers from Alexander Wang to Rag and Bone.
First, let’s talk about an acutely fashion-conscious couple: Actor Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna. Bright navy is definitely Channing’s color with his classic 3-piece blue suit. Being a tall man, the suit needs to be tailored correctly to fit his stature and in this case, it is. Channing off-sets the saturated tone of the navy with a crisp white button-down shirt and matching dark tie. Jenna Tatum looks absolutely stunning in her gown with the grey beaded top and simple white bottom that clings to her curves without showing too much.
In keeping with the “grey” theme, Twilight Saga- famed Kristen Stewart arrived on the red carpet in a modern-looking short dress with a grey mesh turtleneck, flared white short skirt trimmed in that same grey, and a set of matching pumps. With the short cropped hair and complimentary toned make-up, Kristen takes on sort of a quasi-futuristic look.
Lastly, is someone who has a flair for the dramatic: Steven Tyler. His full length black and white pinstriped top-coat and matching designer slim shirt is in keeping with Steven’s dramatic fashion and is accented by his wide-leg black leather pants and red snake skin shoes. There is definitely no chance that he would be mistaken for anyone else!
While celebrities spend most of their time trying to look good in front of the cameras, sometimes the choices that they make are nothing short of fashion flops.
For example, the usually sharply dressed former American Idol judge Randy Jackson is looking like something out of a children’s book with his bright purple light jacket with orange, yellow, and blue dinosaurs all over. Randy’s style is usually unique, but this choice in outerwear is a first AND a last! Man, even the slim jeans are cuffed too high…
Next is singer Nicki Minaj, who also jumped on the same crazy brightly colored bandwagon, but she look like someone used bedspreads and ruffles to create her multi-tiered nightmare. If she dropped the two bottom tiers and was left with the mini-dress version, Nicki might have gotten away with it, since she is known for her unusual style. However, the dress as a whole should go back to the bedrooms that it came from.
Another questionable choice was made by Alan Cummings, who is well-known recently for his role in “The Good Wife” in which he spends most of his time in a conservative suit. Here, Alan did a 180 and went chaotic in a black-and-white shards print shirt and trousers. I could see rummaging deep into the slim dress shirts pile for a pronounced statement, but the pants just have to go, my man! I have the feeling if you look at him long enough, you will come away with a headache.
Lastly is singer Robyn, who is on the red carpet of the Grammys in this white outfit that scarcely qualifies as a gown. The top looks like she borrowed her man’s underwear shirt. The skirt, which may be in a nice satin fabric, looks like it was cut out in art class and the “Frankenstein” work boots are just plain ugly.
Fall not only brings a change in season, but it is also a time of new television season premieres and new movie releases.
One popular, on-going comedy series is “The Big Bang Theory”. One of the leading “nerds” is Johnny Galecki, who is looking anything but nerd-ish, strolling down the street in his nicely tailored black suit with a mini-polka dot patterned button-down shirt, and a pair of cool Aviator sunglasses.
Next, is child actress Ashley Tisdale at the Season 5 premiere of “Walking Dead”, who is all grown up and the definition of rocker chic in her low-cut, black leather crop top with the peplum style bottom, severely distressed low-rise grey jeans, and her peep-toe black leather boots.
Another celebrity red carpet arrival is actor Luke Evans and actress Sarah Gadon, who are out on the town for the London premiere of the movie “Dracula Untold”. Luke looks fantastic in his fashionable, double-breasted grey suit with purplish patterned tie. Sarah is trendy in her white lace overlay top and A-line taffeta black skirt, however, I think that it could have been a little more fitted, to show some of her curves.
Lastly, is another arrival at the “Dracula Untold” UK premiere. Sienna Guillary has taken “mismatched” to the next level with her olive colored pageboy cap, yellow printed blouse, and Justin Bieber-like navy shorts. Sadly, the only things that I like about Sienna’s outfit are her black leather clutch and black platform sandals. It kind of looks like she got dressed without a mirror and in the dark!
