Although New York Fashion Week might be over and Fall 2013 is months away, you can still take inspiration from the runway and incorporate it into your daily look. I’m talking about makeup, or specifically, lipstick. It’s one of the easiest and most versatile products in your makeup stash to use and accessorize with. From hot pink lips at Dior to wine-stained lips at Vera, bold colors were in abundance, which gives you a lot of options to play with.
Of course, not all lipsticks are created equal. While I’ll admit that it’s possible to find drugstore dupes for high-end brands, investing in a good lipstick is the difference between a product that stays perfectly on your lips after coffee, or a product that fades and smudges within an hour or two.
To get that runway-inspired look, I recommend going straight to the source. Many fashion houses have their own cosmetics lines, and while they’re pricier than your average makeup products, they’re often highly pigmented and longer lasting. Added bonus: have you seen the packaging?
For a solid range of matte reds, I recommend Chanel’s Rouge Allure line ($34 at Chanel makeup counters). This lipstick feels deliciously velvety when applied and dries down to a feather-light feeling on the lips. A more modern alternative to red is a bright orange, which has become increasingly popular in the past year.
If you’re leaning towards more feminine hues, Dior will be releasing their runway pink, Darling, in September, but until then may I suggest Star Fuchsia 766, or Rouge Blossom 644 ($32 at Sephora).
Lastly, for those who crave a glossier look, try YSL’s revolutionary Rouge Pur Couture Vernis A Levres Glossy Stain ($34 at Sephora). One layer gives the lips a soft stain, while a second layer intensifies the color, giving you a bold, luscious look. You won’t need to worry about re-application, as the product fades evenly throughout the day, reverting to a soft stain.
Of course, the best method for picking a lipstick is to simply go in person to a makeup store and try the product on. You don’t need an easel or pochade box - it’s a fun and easy way to wear some of your favorite brands.
