When it comes to color in fashion, there is always a yearly trend that is usually set by Pantone, but there are certain colors that that are staples in every closet. Besides the classics of black and white, blue is one of those versatile colors that never seem to go out of style. It is a universally flattering color on most everyone and is “camera-friendly” hue.
For this Spring and Summer menswear collections, the color blue has been taken to new levels with the use of more intense blues and mixing them with unexpected colors and patterns. The first example of the prevalence of the color blue in men’s street style is this “ocean blue”, one button blazer that takes center stage over a white button-down shirt and white trousers. The cool colors of the outfit are warmed up with a cognac brown leather satchel and slip-on loafers of the same color.
If you are wondering what is hot or trending in fashion for men this season, besides the runway and the stores, the street is a good place to look. Street style, or streetwear, is a category or fashion where you will see what people are really wearing, as opposed to the extremes of style that may be found on the runways or store fronts.
For Spring 2014, the streets of Milan Italy and Paris have some new and exciting menswear fashions. First, is a casual outfit that starts with a crisp white button-down shirt and a taupe plaid vest layered over it. The whole outfit is kicked up by adding a pair of butter yellow trousers. The total look is accessorized by casual brown leather lace-ups, some skinny suspenders from JJ Suspenders, a chic brown leather watch, a coordinating sports jacket, and the perfect shades.
Moving on to the streets of Paris, color blocking is key with this grey and ivory colored top that has a black “corsage style” adornment and is combined with a pair of slim-leg navy pants that have rolled-up cuffs. His brown leather buckle shoes and olive jacket prove that matching is not necessary, if the colors have the same tone.
Next, is a men’s street style that shows how to combine more than one pattern in an outfit. His blue geometric stripe shirt coordinates with his polka dot trousers and they are grounded with a neutral sage, double-breasted sports coat and canvas slip-on shoes. This grounding is important in keeping the patterns from looking too busy.
Lastly, is an outfit that is a turn in the “pastel” direction, which is also off the streets of Milan Italy. The light lavender, double-breasted suit is paired with rainbow colored high-tops and exemplifies a softer side of fashion. This look is a little too “candy-like” for my taste, but the suit may be a little more wearable with a light brown shirt and cognac leather loafers.
Nothing feels more spring then bright pastels. While not a hard color palette to master it’s important to break up the candy-colored clothing in order to avoid looking like a giant Marshmallow Peep! Accent your pastels with blacks, neutrals, and contrasting colors and you can wear them anywhere.
A blazer or cardigan is a great way to infuse a little fun into your workday wardrobe. Try a soft pastel colored cardigan with a skinny belt over a basic black dress for a look that’s appropriate and put together. Or go for a structured light colored blazer to show your softer side.
On a Picnic
A light airy pastel dress is the perfect option for an alfresco meal. Try a mint or coral dress paired with gold or neutral sandals. If it’s a little chilly add a denim jacket or white cardigan, just don’t go for pastel on pastel.
Going Out for Date Night
A nice top in a soft hue can be both feminine and sexy. Pair it with a pair of black pants and killer black or metallic heels for instant night time appeal. A fun clutch completes the outfit and adds some extra interest.
Summer dresses are the perfect light weight option for walking around town, lunch with friends, and running errands. They are soft, comfortable and come in maternity sizes as well.
Jessica Simpson’s Cap Sleeve Tie Detail Maternity Maxi Dress is a double whammy. Both comfortable and cute with a v-nck and a tie detail it’s sure to be one of your favorites!
Feel beautiful no matter how far along you are in your pregnancy with a high low dress. Motherhoood’s Strapless Empire Waist Maternity Dress comes in a flattering black and white stripe and shows just a little bit of leg.

If you live anywhere that currently has snow on the ground or a chill in the air, the thought of buying sandals must sound like crazy talk. Maybe you’re right; it will be cold for another couple weeks or so, but once that sun peaks through the clouds you’re going to be wishing you got the jump on the spring sandal race. Here are a few things to reflect on before picking out your next pair.
Make a Color Statement
The colors you wear say a lot about whom you are; so don’t make the mistake in choosing the random pigment that looks cute. There are a number of things to consider when picking out the hue you’re going to be prancing around in:
- Before anything else, take a quick peek around in your closet. What colors do you already have in there? Don’t forget that your footwear will be a component in a much larger collective outfit, so make sure that you don’t pick a look that will clash with what you tend to wear on a regular basis.
- Brighter tints look a lot better in the daylight. The opposite could be said about darker shades, so save those for the nighttime.
- Take a look at fashion trends. Radiant Orchid is a color that is in NOW, so don’t hesitate to try it out. Another look that is making waves is the use of metallic, so add some playful sparkle to your outfit.
- Do you have a favorite polish you like to paint your toes with? If you’re partial to a particular shade, make sure that the sandals you’re choosing compliment this specific color.
Another thing to think about when buying your next pair of sandals is to consider the kind of environment in which you’ll be utilizing the footwear. If you are buying sandals for dinner or simply to go out at night, your best bet will be a pair with a chunky heel and sexy straps that will help to dress up your look. For ideas, check out the ladylike wedge sandals sold by Tory Brunch. Reversely, for a causal look purchase a set of flats that will you can comfortably go about your day in without the distraction of aching feet. For the girls who love leather, now is your time to express that. Skipping around in leather is no fun in the summer heat; utilize the cooler temperatures of the spring for this look.
Tired of Those Clown Shoes?
No matter what kind of shoe you wear, make sure it fits. Did you know that your feet swell over the course of the day? Because of this, it’s best to try on the sandals in the afternoon or evening in order to get your optimal size. Of course, proper fit pertains to more than just size; your arches may have special requirements that you aren’t meeting. Do you overpronate? Are your arches unusually high?
If you’re unsure of the answer to these questions, consider talking with a footwear specialist so you can make sure that your choices in shoes are comfortable and wont’ lead to preventable injuries. There are plenty of options that are crafted to fit specific health needs; Footwear etc. sells Vionic sandals with Orthaheel technology that is designed to support collapsed arches; and the sporty Oofos Ooah Slide Recovery Sandal (found here) is crafted to minimize post-workout pain with extra cushioning.
Now that you know what to look for in your sandals, snuggle up to the fire and dream of the warm sun as you prepare to find those shoes that will make your day.
Have you ever noticed that certain colors go in and out of style. Maybe you thought it was a coincidence that the racks of your favorite store were all filled with similar hues. Just like people predict the newest sound in music, the next hot color was already decided for you before you even got to the store. There was Emerald Green, Tangerine, Honeysuckle and now Pantone, the authority on color, has called Dazzling Blue the color of Spring 2014. Expect to see it featured everywhere from dresses to bags to probably even cheap spinner suitcases! And fortunately, as spring colors go, this shade of blue can outlast the season.
This cobalt blue might look familiar (perhaps you’ve seen it in the Facebook logo for on Citibank’s bicycles) but the best part is it’s very wearable. There’s a good chance you probably already own a few pieces in this bold shade, but if you’re in the market for something new go all in with a bright frock such as Elie Tahari’s Ginger dress with an angular neckline and a black leather trim. Or, add a blue dress with a flared skirt such as Julia Jordan’s Cobalt Wave Textured Stretch Knit Fit and Flare Dress.
