One shining “fashion spotlight that we all look forward to in the dead of winter is Mercedes Benz Fashion Week NYC. The city buzzes with excitement as veteran and emerging designers put forth their creations for Spring/Summer 2014. From February 6th to the 13th this fashion week’s schedule is packed with designer shows that highlight their efforts over the past year for the up and coming season.
Even though is seems that women’s fashion is the focus for most designers in this Mercedes Benz Fashion Week show, there are several menswear designers on the scene. For example, Libertine is a brand that was created by Johnson Hartig in 2000 and has revolutionized the use of graphic art in traditional clothing. The first runway photo is noted for its unusual subject matter of heads that are boldly distributed over his grey sports jacket and tan trousers. This particular look reminds me of a post card that has been stamped several times over and may be too “graphic” for most tastes.
The second design by Libertine for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is a multi-colored, simulation of patterns that looks more like he is wearing a suit made from a piñata! The explosions of colors and patterns would definitely be an attention-getter.
Another men’s designer who caught my eye is Ricardo Seco. He was originally a businessman from Mexico, who’s love of fashion made him a self taught designer who is revered for his clean, unique style. One of my favorite looks is this black and white color-blocked leather jacket with the wide lapels that is paired with a black and grey layered t-shirt and casual tie-waist black trousers. This design by Seco is a very wearable and timeless look. The pants though are less than amazing – perhaps he should look to Edwin Jeans for some inspiration?
Ricardo Seco’s version of graphic design is much simpler with this long men’s tank top with the grey “swimming fish”. It looks great with the fuller leg pants, but I am not so sold on the sleeveless leather baseball jacket. Pair them with some Redwing Boots though and maybe you could pull off a deconstructed military look!
