Men’s Fashion Advice: Successfully rocking the band t-shirt

There are times when decide to keep my style simple, and in the summer there is no better look than the band t-shirt paired with a pair of jeans, or weather permitting a pair of shorts.

From Chace Crawford to Sam Worthington, the band t-shirt is a popular look among celebrities and one that anybody can pull off… all you need is your favorite band t-shirt.  You can either pick up a t-shirt at a gig or there are plenty of online retailers selling band merch and t-shirts, which are ideal choices if you can’t make the concert or want to buy a Led Zeppelin t-shirt based on their 1969 tour design.

A quick check among the celebrity wearers shows that the bands to be seen in are AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Motorhead and the New York Dolls. What I wasn’t expecting to see was so much love for the mighty Iron Maiden – not that they don’t deserve it, I just didn’t expect this to be a band so revered by Hollywood!

My personal top 5 band t-shirts for the gent who loves to rock are:

  • Sonic Youth – Goo t-shirt
  • Led Zeppelin – Los Angeles 1977 t-shirt
  • Slash – Flames t-shirt
  • Motorhead – England t-shirt
  • Johnny Cash – Mean as Hell t-shirt

You will have your favorite band though, so don’t just copy the celebrities, show some love for the bands and music that mean something to you.

If you’re after some style advice about what jeans to pair the t-shirt with then I recommend a pair of chinos for this summer. They seem to be all the rage and available in what seems like an endless range of colors. No Excess Canvas Chinos would be my first choice but MQT Jeans have an ace look as do Voi Jeans.

Plimsolls are going to be the footwear of choice for summer 2012 again, and work perfectly with jeans and a t-shirt. For some extra “stand-out” points I finish off my outfit in some vintage Nike Air trainers.

So, if the sun is shining stick on a t-shirt and head on down to Paradise City!
